This is a normal diet, restricted only in certain foods that have excessive salt or sodium. Avoid serving your child canned and prepared frozen foods. Read all labels carefully. Attempt to keep the child's total sodium intake below 3.5 grams per day.

  • Regular bread and cereals
  • Crackers with salted tops
  • Pretzels
  • Salted Popcorn
DESSERTS
  • All, in moderation
  • No restrictions
FATS
  • All except those in omitted column
  • Bacon and bacon fat
  • Salt pork
  • Olives
  • Prepared meats
FRUITS
  • All
  • No restrictions
MEAT AND MEAT SUBSTITUTES
  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Poultry
  • Eggs
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Dried beans and peas
  • All cheeses except those ommited
  • Cured fish and meats may be consumed once a week
Any meat, fish or poultry that is smoked, brine-cured or salted, including:
  • Bacon
  • Bologna
  • Chipped beef
  • Corned beef
  • Frankfurters
  • Luncheon meats
  • Ham
  • Kosher meats
  • Salt pork
  • Sausages
  • Salted or smoked fish such as herring, anchovies, sardines, or salted codfish
  • Processed cheese
  • Cheese spreads
  • Cheese such as Roquefort or Camembert
POTATOES AND SUBSTITUTES
  • All except potato chips
  • Potato chips
SEASONINGS AND FLAVORINGS
  • A small amount of salt or other seasoning may be used in cooking
  • Salt at the table
  • Catsup

  • Soy sauce
SOUPS
  • Cream soups
