General guidelines for you or your daughter during pregnancy:

  • Increase your normal caloric intake about 10% above what you should normally consume if you were not pregnant.
  • Except under unusual circumstances, don't try to lose weight during pregnancy. The average weight gain in an uncomplicated pregnancy is 22 to 27 pounds.
  • Make sure your diet contains adequate protein during pregnancy and during breast-feeding. Protein is the ''building block'' of body tissue.
  • Iron, vitamins, minerals, and calcium supplements are helpful to maintain proper nutrition. Follow your doctor's recommendations. Remember that calcium tablets are not a substitute for milk.
  • Use iodized salt.
  • Avoid caffeine during pregnancy. Either eliminate coffee, cola, cocoa, tea, and other caffeine-containing substances from your diet, or reduce the amount you consume drastically.
